It is with great sadness we announce the
passing of Shirley Ann Veniott, 80 years
plus a day, on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, in High Crest Nursing Home,
Springhill.
Born Shirley Ann Hatton in Worthing,
Sussex County, England in 1946 to Gertrude and James
Hatton.
Her mother was an English War Bride who
brought Shirley (3 months old) and Jimmy over on the Queen Mary,
arriving at Pier Twenty One in July 1946. From there she
came to Springhill where she grew up.
Following graduation from Nova Scotia
Teachers College, she returned to Springhill where she taught Junior
High students for 31 years, retiring in 1998, all while raising her
two children Danny and Heather.
She pushed for an education for both,
and each one was extremely successful and made her very
proud. She had 4 grandchildren, Brooke, Erin, Lynsey and
James, the light of her life.
Shirley was a kind caring loving mother
and grandmother who was always involved in her families
lives. She believed in "I am who I am; What
you see is what you get; and Take me as I am!" She was
proudly independent, stubborn and in control.
She was very involved in her community
throughout her life, volunteering with the Springhill Fire Department
Ladies Auxiliary where she held every position of Executive.
She taught Sunday School at St. Andrews Wesley United
Church. She was an avid Curler, and was past president of
the local Curling Club auxiliary. She was a member of the
Springhill Centennial Executive. the Queen's Pagent for
Centennial; she was on the Blues Executive. She loved her
social time at Tim Horton's.
Shirley will be forever missed by her
son Danny (Stacey) Woodstock, ON and her daughter, Heather (Gerald);
her beloved grandchildren, James, Erin, Brooke and Lynsey; brothers,
Jim (Nancy) Hatton, Bruce (Donna) Hatton and Paul (Belinda) Hatton;
many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Shirley was
predeceased by a granddaughter Macy Gallagher, brothers, Dale, Rodger
and Ralph.
Arrangements are under the care and
direction of the A. H. Brown Funeral
Home, 5 McFarlane Street, Springhill, (902 597
2361). An Afternoon of Remembrance will be held at Brown's
Funeral Home on Sunday, May 24, 2026 from 2 until 4 pm. An
private family interment will happen at a later date.
Shirley's family wish to extend
heartfelt thanks to Dr. Kariveli, Dr. McWilliams, and the nurses and
staff at High Crest Nursing Home who gave her a wonderful final
year.
