It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Shirley Ann Veniott, 80 years plus a day, on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, in High Crest Nursing Home, Springhill.

Born Shirley Ann Hatton in Worthing, Sussex County, England in 1946 to Gertrude and James Hatton.

Her mother was an English War Bride who brought Shirley (3 months old) and Jimmy over on the Queen Mary, arriving at Pier Twenty One in July 1946.  From there she came to Springhill where she grew up.

Following graduation from Nova Scotia Teachers College, she returned to Springhill where she taught Junior High students for 31 years, retiring in 1998, all while raising her two children Danny and Heather.

She pushed for an education for both, and each one was extremely successful and made her very proud.  She had 4 grandchildren, Brooke, Erin, Lynsey and James, the light of her life.

Shirley was a kind caring loving mother and grandmother who was always involved in her families lives.  She believed in "I am who I am;  What you see is what you get; and Take me as I am!"  She was proudly independent, stubborn and in control.

She was very involved in her community throughout her life, volunteering with the Springhill Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary where she held every position of Executive.  She taught Sunday School at St. Andrews Wesley United Church.  She was an avid Curler, and was past president of the local Curling Club auxiliary.  She was a member of the Springhill Centennial Executive.  the Queen's Pagent for Centennial; she was on the Blues Executive.  She loved her social time at Tim Horton's.

Shirley will be forever missed by her son Danny (Stacey) Woodstock, ON and her daughter, Heather (Gerald); her beloved grandchildren, James, Erin, Brooke and Lynsey; brothers, Jim (Nancy) Hatton, Bruce (Donna) Hatton and Paul (Belinda) Hatton; many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Shirley was predeceased by a granddaughter Macy Gallagher, brothers, Dale, Rodger and Ralph.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of the A. H. Brown Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane Street, Springhill, (902 597 2361).  An Afternoon of Remembrance will be held at Brown's Funeral Home on Sunday, May 24, 2026 from 2 until 4 pm.  An private family interment will happen at a later date.

Shirley's family wish to extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. Kariveli, Dr. McWilliams, and the nurses and staff at High Crest Nursing Home who gave her a wonderful final year.
