It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of The Rev. Elizabeth Jane Davies, B.A., M.Div., age 81, of Southampton. Elizabeth passed away on Sunday, September 29, 2024 at the High Crest Nursing Home in Springhill.
Born in Ontario, she was a daughter of the late Jack and Anne (Monkman) Davies.
The Davies Family moved to Moncton, N.B., where Elizabeth attended and graduated from Moncton High School in 1960. In 1962, she graduated from UNB with a Teaching Degree; then from Mount Allison University in 1966 with a B.A. She taught in various schools in the Maritimes, Ontario and Quebec before entering Pine Hill Divinity Hall, graduating with a B.Div in 1970. She ventured across the Atlantic Ocean to Scotland, to attend Glasgow University's Theological College-Trinity, from 1970 - 1973. Concerns for her Mother's health caused Elizabeth to return to Canada before she could obtain her PhD in Glasgow, however, she then chose to attain her M.Div from Pine Hill in 1974. Elizabeth offered her gift of Ministry in the United Church in Parry Sound, Ontario; Sydney, Nova Scotia; McAdam, New Brunswick/Vanceboro, Maine; Mapleton and Southampton, Nova Scotia. She answered a call to a group of Presbyterian churches in Cumberland, which included St. David's Church, Springhill, St. James, Oxford, and St. Andrew's, Kolbec. She again returned to assist Southampton United until their closure in September 2020. She was honoured by the United Church of Canada in 2021 for providing 'devoted ministry' for a period of 50 years.
Elizabeth's artistic talents were outstanding. Give her material and she could craft an award-winning quilt; knitting needles and yarn, she could make a baby layette, blankets, mittens or sweater! Choosing bright colours to keep knitting all year towards the goal of helping to fill the Christmas Mitten Tree at the various churches she served over the years. Elizabeth loved her pets - her cats and dogs were her first concern and they were a necessary part of her life.
Elizabeth will be dearly missed by her cousins Steven and Janet Fluke and Susie Trenholm; as well as long time friend Rev. Anne Jackson of England. She is also survived by her Church Family of Southampton.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to A. H. Brown Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane Street, Springhill, (902 597 2361).
