With heavy hearts, we announce the
passing of Gary Leyland Brown, Age 79, of
East Mapleton, Nova Scotia. Surrounded by his loving family, Gary
passed away on Friday, April 19, 2024 at the Cumberland Regional
Health Care Centre in Upper Nappan, NS.
Gary was born in Springhill, NS on
February 27, 1945 to parents Elijah and Phyllis (Sproul)
Brown.
Though he both started and ended his
life living among the blueberry fields of the Lynn Mountain, he spent
many years living in Springhill on the Herrett Road, where he watched
his children and grandchildren grow up, had many adventures, and made
numerous memories with friends.
During his career spanning nearly four
decades, Gary dedicated himself to the residential and commercial
construction industry across Atlantic Canada. He served in various
capacities, including as a surveyor, estimator, and site
superintendent, leaving his mark on numerous projects throughout the
region.
He was a committed volunteer throughout
his lifetime, Gary generously devoted his time to various
organizations, including the Cumberland South Liberal Association, The
Boy Scouts, and Springhill Minor Baseball. His passion for community
service was evident in his role as a mentor, guiding three scouts to
achieve the prestigious Queen Scout award and coaching the Springhill
Midget Blues to consecutive provincial titles.
Gary's love for sports knew no bounds,
but his heart belonged to baseball and his beloved Boston Red Sox. You
could see the joy in his eyes when they clinched the World Series
victory in 2004, especially after defeating the New York Yankees along
the way.
Despite his tough and gruff facade, Gary
had a heart of gold hidden beneath that exterior. He might've grumbled
and muttered under his breath, but he was always first in line to help
out someone when they needed it.
He had a profound love of the place
where he was lucky enough to call home. He often said that the best
thing in the world was watching a Lynn Mountain sunset with his dogs
by his side. He loved to hunt, the blueberry fields, tending his
garden, and fishing in his pond; but above all else, he loved his
family.
Gary is survived by his loving wife of
59 years, Linda. His two sons, Gary Jr. (Karen) of Brookdale and
Joseph (Christine) of Coldbrook. Two grandchildren, who were his pride
and joy, Matt (Brittany) and Danielle (Peter) and Step-Granddaughter,
Veronica. His little brother John (Faye) of Fredericton, and several
nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Besides his parents Gary was predeceased
by a brother Joseph and sister Joy, who both died in
infancy.
In the end, Gary's life was not just one
of toughness and tenderness, but also of love and legacy. As a
cherished husband, brother, father and grandfather, his impact on
those around him is immeasurable. From his gruff exterior to his
generous heart, Gary's presence left an undeniable mark on everyone
fortunate enough to cross his path.
The family would like to extend thanks
to the staff at CRHCC for their compassionate care, especially to Amy
and the palliative care team.
Arrangements have been entrusted to
