It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Laura Rose Smith, age 55, of Springhill, NS.  Laura passed away at her daughters home in Amherst on Friday, August 11, 2023 after a lengthy battle with Cancer.

Born in Tatamagouche, NS, she was a daughter of Barbara (Guest) Smith, and the late Walter Smith.

Laura grew up surrounded by many siblings John, Annette, Terry, Trevor and Joey. She attended Pugwash District High being one of the only siblings to graduate. Later in life Laura went to Vocational School taking a secretary course.

Laura met her children’s father David Heffernan on a blind date on New Year’s Eve of 1992. They later welcomed their first daughter Miranda Janice in November of 93, and youngest daughter Samantha Ann in March of 96.

Laura’s children were her reason for living. She was a wonderful mother often walking them into town for treats, taking them off on vacations, and trying her best to make sure her girls had everything they needed. She was a fighter who proved that single moms are the strongest people in the world. She had sweet nicknames for her girls, Miranda being Roober Doo, Samantha’s being Baby Girl. Laura spent many years working at Oxford Frozen Foods where she was given many of her own "special" nicknames.

In June of 2018 Laura graduated from the Social Services program following her life passion of helping persons with disabilities. Laura worked at Willow House for a few years where she met life long friends and worked with her daughter Samantha, and her "third daughter" Hayley Waddell.

Laura spent the last few months of her life working with children at Spring Street Academy in Amherst. She looked forward to going back everyday. Laura’s true loves were her grand babies Lincoln and Penelope. She often said that being a nanny was the best thing in the world. Lincoln and Penelope loved their "nana-lana ding dong" very much and spent a lot of time with her as she only lived right down the road. Laura will also be deeply missed by her son-in-law Sean Rogers. Laura made sure to tell everyone just how special he was.

Laura was the type of person you meet only once in a lifetime and even though she was only here for a short time, it was a good time. May she always be remembered for her huge heart and sassy attitude.

Laura is predeceased by her father and very special nephew Nick MacDonald.

Laura will be dearly missed by her mother Barb of Malagash; daughters Miranda Heffernan (Mitchell), Springhill and Sam Heffernan (Sean Rogers), Amherst; grandchildren Lincoln and Penelope; siblings John Cook, Malagash, NS, Annette (Greg) Hicks, Springhill, NS, Terry (Bessie) Smith, Oxford Junction, Trevor Smith (Tracy Furlong), Wyndham Hill, NS and Joey Smith, Malagash, NS.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of the A. H. Brown Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane Street, Springhill, (902 597 2361). A public graveside service will be held in the Hillside Cemetery, Springhill, NS on Tuesday, August 15, 2023 at 11 am, followed by a reception at A H Brown Funeral Home.
