Oscar Basil Lowe aged 94 years
of Springhill and formerly from Mapleton, Springhill and Amherst,
passed away on Thursday, November 13, 2014 in the High Crest Nursing
Home, Springhill. Born in Maccan, NS on October 2, 1920, he was the
son of the late Thompson Percy and Alma (Reid) Lowe.
He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and a past
member of the Knights of Pythians Lodge in Southampton. Basil enlisted
in the Royal Canadian Army in British Columbia. He went through basic
training and jungle training in Alberta and was packed ready to depart
for action in Japan when news arrived that the war was over. He came
back to Mapleton where he helped with the family dairy business. Later
he moved to the West Coast again to work for 9 years. He worked for 17
years at Maritime Steel in New Glasgow as well as several years at the
Canada Car Aircraft Division. Fishing, hunting, snowmobiling and bingo
were major components of his life. Basil lived independently and drove
his own car up until the end of 2012. He entered the High Crest
Nursing Home DVA wing in Springhill early in 2013. He was a caring
individual by nature and spent many years caring for and visiting his
mother, sister and great aunt in nursing homes as they
aged.
He will be sadly missed by sister, Alice (Fred) Ripley of
Kitchener, Ontario, sister-in-law Connie Lowe of Springhill and
several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sisters Nellie Lockhart, Bertha
Brown and Kathelene Lowe and his brother Fred.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted into the care and
supervision of A. H. Brown Funeral
Service, 5 McFarlane Street, Springhill, (902 597 2361)
where visitation will be held On Monday, November 17,
2014 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm followed immediately at 2:00 pm by
the funeral service with The Reverend Elizabeth Davies officiating.
Burial to follow in The Mapleton Cemetery.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff

and compassion.
