Mackey, Rev. Jeremiah (Jerry),
priest of the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth, died on September 3,
2014 in Springhill, NS.
Born in Springhill, in
1924, to the late William and Sarah (MacDonald) Mackey, he received
his early education in Springhill, completed undergraduate studies at
St. Mary’s University and Theology at Holy Heart Seminary in
Halifax.
Fr. Mackey was ordained to the
priesthood on March 25, 1950 by Most Rev. Alfred B. Leverman in
Halifax.
Fr. Jerry served as assistant priest
at St. Theresa’s (1950) and St. Thomas Aquinas (1955),
Halifax; Administrator then Pastor of St. Rose of Lima, Windsor
Junction (1963); Pastor of St. Brigid’s, Parrsboro (1966)
and St. Peter’s, Ketch Harbour as well as Special assistant
at St. Michael’s, Spryfield (1969); Chaplain at the St.
Vincent’s Guest House (1972); Pastor of Our Lady of Mount
Carmel, Prospect and its missions (1981) and Chaplain at the NS
Hospital, Dartmouth and Camp Hill Hospital, Halifax (1982). He retired
from full-time ministry in 1993.
Fr. Mackey
served as the Archdiocesan Vocations Director, the Associate Dean of
St. Charles Deanery, and the Archdiocesan representative on the
Maritime Religious Advisory Committee of the CBC. He founded
the Aquinas Social Club during his 8 years at St. Thomas Aquinas
Parish. During his time in residence at St. Mary’s
Cathedral Glebe (2011-2012), he regularly spent time with those who
came to the Cathedral’s Outreach program.
Fr. Jerry is survived by his sister, Kathleen Hynes of Waltham,
MA and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, he
was predeceased by his brothers Dennis and James; his sisters
Elizabeth, Margaret, Veronica and Cecilia; as well as 2 sisters and 1
brother in infancy.
Visitation will be on
Sunday, September 7th from 7-9 pm; Monday, September 8 from 11 am to
1pm at A.H. Brown Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane St., Springhill, NS
(902-597-2361). The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St.
John the Baptist Church, Springhill, on September 8th at 2:00 pm, Very
Rev. John Williams presiding. A reception will follow in the
Church Hall.
Interment will be on Tuesday,
September 9th at 10 am at the North Street Roman Catholic Cemetery,
Springhill; Fr. David MacDonald officiating.
