Ryan, Dennis
Phillip, 88 years, of Victoria Street,
Springhill. Dennis’s family is sorry to announce
his passing on May 31/19. He was the beloved son of Margaret
Devona (Johnson) and Phillip Arthur Ryan. Dennis spent his
life in Springhill working in the coal mine for 8 years, followed by
several years in construction of the Springhill Medium Security
Institution, the Springhill Junior-Senior High School and the
Springhill Golf Course. The last seventeen years of his
working career were with the town of Springhill’s Street and
Water Department. He retired in 1993.
Dennis was proud of his heritage and
loved to collect flags, pins and other memorabilia for his Irish roots
(Ryan) and Norwegian roots (Johnson). In his younger years
he travelled one summer to B.C. with his uncle, many times to
Provincetown Mass. with his family, to visit his Aunt Ina, and many
summers and weekends at his parents’ cottage in Port
Philip. As travel became difficult, he found joy in card
parties and church suppers and sitting on his front porch to greet
friends and neighbors.
His later years brought physical
limitations and he was fortunate to have had many wonderful friends,
neighbors, and home care workers who made it possible for him to stay
in his family home until this past year. His last months
were spent in Gables Lodge, Amherst and High-Crest,
Springhill. The care he received was exemplary and we thank
all who helped Dennis in his senior years.
Dennis is survived by first cousins
including, Ivan Johnson (Margaret) Kathleen Ryan, Croydon Wood and
others, and many second, third and fourth cousins too
numerous to mention. He touched many lives and we will miss
him.
