It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mum, Doris A. Stonehouse on May 16, 2019 in Gables Lodge, Amherst. Born in Westchester, Mum was the youngest daughter of the late Dexter and Mary (Weatherbee) Fountain.

She was the last surving member of a family of fourteen. Mum grew up beside Ralph Stonehouse who later became her husband. His early death in 1975 left Mum alone to maintain her home and provide for her family. As a young woman she worked at Canada Car and Foundry, Amherst, NS and in much later years retired from All Saints Hospital , Springhill as First Cook. Doris enjoyed visits from her family, knitting socks and mittens for everyone and would often relax with her morning newspaper completing the crossword and cryptoquote. Doris was a home body but always looked forward to attending the Pythian Sisters Lodge with her friends. She also enjoyed cooking for family and friends, especially at special occasions. Doris was a great sports fan, always watching baseball, hockey and curling. She never missed seeing Kevin Martin curl. She was also a bird watcher and a lover of nature.

Doris was a testament to hard work, commitment and value of a sense of humor. She was a lady of great wisdom, kindness and strength. Mum is survived by and much loved by all her children, Russell (Diane) of Calgary, Lucy (late John) Brown, Shelburne, Nancy (Bill) Carr , Dartmouth, George (Judy) Toronto, Viva of Halifax, Chuck (Diane), Doug, Rick (Sue) all of Springhill, Cindy of Halifax, Marie (Reg) Jewkes, Truro.  She also enjoyed her many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of A H Brown Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane Street, Springhill, (902 507 2361). No visitation by request. A Graveside Committal Service will be held in the Rose Cemetery, Cumb. Co., at a later date.

Many thanks to Gables staff and to the many Angels for the care they have given Mum during her stay.

Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to choice. Sharing of memories and condolences may be sent to the family by visiting Doris's online memorial at www.brownsfuneralhome.com or through the A H Brown Funeral Home Facebook Page.
