It is with sadness that we announce the
passing of Norman Fulmer Harrison, age
90, of Springhill. Norman passed away peacefully on Sunday,
May 14, 2017 at the High Crest Nursing Home.
Born in Athol, NS, he was a son of the
late John Fulmer Harrison and Georgie Hill (Morris Harrison)
Lodge.
Norman received his early education in
Southampton and his high school diploma in Springhill. He studied
education at the Nova Scotia Normal College and taught for 3 years,
first at the Chignecto School and then at the East Mapleton School. He
worked one year in a factory in Toronto and then helped his brothers
Raymond in a lumber mill and George with a garage before starting to
work at Enamel/Heating as a Tool and Die Maker. While at Enheat he was
sent to Montreal to work on a major aircraft contract. He ended his
career as a maintenance civil engineer at Northern Telecom where he
was recognized for designing a patented tool.
Norman was a member of the Southampton
Knights of Pythias, a founding member of the Athol Co-op, a long time
member of the Mapleton United Church of Canada, a life time member of
the Canadian Liberal Party, a long-serving leader of the Ro-Win-Lea
4-H club, actively involved with Home and School while his children
were school-age, and a member of the Genealogical Association of Nova
Scotia. Norman supported several community institutions and charities
throughout his life. He had many interests, such as playing 45's,
gardening, hiking, traveling, genealogy, and local and
global history. He also stayed busy with his blueberry,
maple sugar and forestry work.
His memory will be cherished by his
children Patricia (Don) Gooding, Donnie (Cathy) Harrison, Betty
Harrison, Ruth (John) Whelan and Geraldine (Kevin) Harrison-MacLean;
his nine grandchildren Christopher Gooding, Donald Gooding, Matthew
Harrison, Charlotte Harrison, Joshua Whelan, Erin Whelan, Meghan
Whelan, Mackenzie Rogers, and Emerald Gallant; his five
great grandchildren River, Luke, Noah, Anesia and Arrick; his numerous
nieces and nephews; and his second wife Margaret (Legere)
Harrison.
Norman was predeceased by his wife Joyce
Marie (Willigar) Harrison, his daughter Jean Marie Harrison, his
brothers George, Arthur, Raymond and Reginald, and his only sister
Jennie (Reid).
Arrangements have been entrusted to
A H Brown Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane St.,
Springhill, NS (902-597-2361) where visitation will take place on
Tuesday from 6 to 8 pm. The funeral service for Norman will
be held at A H Brown Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at 2 pm,
Rev. Morley Bentley officiating. A private family burial
will take place at a later date in the Mapleton
Cemetery.
