CAULFIELD, Doris Beryl — Age 93 years, formerly of Springhill, N.S., died Sunday, October 2, 2016, at the Bayview Memorial Health Centre in Advocate Harbour, N.S. Born in the Springhill Cottage Hospital on July 24, 1923, she was the eldest child of Earl Robinson and Laura Matilda (Shipley) Gilbert.

She attended the Springhill Schools and met her husband, John Alexander Caulfield, when she was in Grade 9. He became her lifelong love.  They married on April 8, 1942, moved to Armdale, N.S., and started their family. A year later, they returned to Springhill where they enjoyed 43 wonderful years together. After Johnny died in 1986, she missed him every day and spoke of him often. A faithful member of St. Andrew’s-Wesley United Church, Doris was a life member of the U.C.W., having served many years as president. At various times, she taught Sunday School, led the Messengers children’s group, and served as a Session member. She took a keen interest in the Cobequid Chapter I.O.D.E., holding the office of Standard Bearer for many years. Doris was devoted to her family and delighted in supporting and encouraging them in their countless academic, sporting, and musical endeavours. She was an ardent reader and avid puzzle-solver, pastimes hindered in later years by macular degeneration. She enjoyed travelling throughout the Maritimes, across Canada, and to the United States with her children and grandchildren. Because Doris didn’t drive, family friend Barbara Moore’s frequent chauffeuring was a particularly special blessing.

Doris is survived by children: Gail Patricia (Peter) Kay, Stellarton, N.S.; Karen Jean (George) Demmons, Riverview, N.B.; Reginald John (Karen Comeau) Caulfield, Dieppe, N.B.; Roger Alan (Cathy Calder) Caulfield, Falmouth, N.S.; and Peter Gilbert Caulfield, Truro, N.S.; grandchildren Jonathan Peter (Pegeen Cassidy) Kay, Toronto, Ont.; Jillian Patricia (Guy) Aucoin, Stellarton, N.S.; Scott Robert (Bonita Hayward) Demmons, Saint John, N.B.; Stephanie Lyn (Kieran) O’Brien, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; John Lyndon Caulfield, London, Ont.; great-grandchildren Alexandra Lillian Kay, Pierre David Aucoin, Katey Monique Aucoin, Lia Joy Demmons, Christian George Demmons, Anna Lynn O’Brien; brother Gerald Robinson (Nellie Hahnen) Gilbert, Springhill, N.S.; sister Shirley Bessie (Hudson) Sears, Truro, N.S.; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, John; infant daughter Florence Ellen; great-granddaughter Gabrielle Patricia Aucoin; infant siblings Hazel Laura and Ross Shipley; sisters Faye Evelyn (Ronald) Livingstone, Springhill; and Vivian Carthell (Thomas) Smith, Rodney, N.S.

The family would like to thank the caring and devoted staff at Bayview Memorial Health Centre in Advocate Harbour, where Doris resided since April 2014, for the exceptional and loving care their mother received.

Arrangements have been entrusted to A. H. Brown Funeral Home, Springhill. Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, October 5 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Andrew’s-Wesley United Church, Springhill, Rev. Wayne A. McCarther officiating. Visitation will be held from the church, from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the funeral at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Springhill. Family flowers only, please. Donations may be made to St. Andrew’s-Wesley United Church or to a charity of your choice. Electronic condolences may be sent via Brown’s Funeral Home website at: www.brownsfuneralhome.com
