The death of John Daniel 'Dan'
MacDonald, 78, of Springhill, occurred suddenly at the
Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre on Monday, July 4, 2016 after a
brief illness. Born in Springhill, Dan was a son of the late Jack and
Kathleen (O'Rourke) MacDonald.
Dan joined the Militia as a teenager having
served for over ten years. In grade twelve, he left school to start
work in the pay office at The Cumberland Railway and Coal Company,
then after the mine closed, he moved to CNR as a station agent.
Following CNR, he started a position with Correctional Services Canada
where he would remain for thirty years until his retirement in
1996.
Dan enjoyed playing in the Old Timer's Hockey League with the
Snowbirds. He was an avid golfer, hunter and fisherman and took great
pride in his gardens. Dan enjoyed a good game of cards and trips to
Bangor, the casino and the harness races with Eleanor.
Dan was a strong family man. He loved spending time with his
grandchildren and they always knew that if a ride was ever needed,
they could always call on Gramp.
He will be deeply missed by his wife of fifty-five years,
Eleanor (nee Black), of Springhill; sons, Tim (Cindy) of Mapleton and
Andrew (Susan) of River Philip; six grandchildren, Sonya, Nick, Moya
and Connor MacDonald, Nicholas (Stephanie) and Brendan White; a
special aunt, Donna, as well as many cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents.
