It is with heavy hearts that we announce
the passing of Shirley Georgina Canning,
age 86, of Springhill, NS. Shirley passed away peacefully
with her family by her side at the High-Crest Nursing Home in
Springhill, NS on Friday January 29, 2016. Born in
Springhill on April 12, 1929, she was a daugher of the late Arthur and
Aveleen (Mitchell) Marshall.
Shirley was educated in the Springhill
schools. She married the love of her life, Gordon Canning,
on June 4, 1949. After raising her three children, she went
to work for several years at the Wardrobes Drug Store, until it's
closure. She was then employed by The Record until her
retirement in 1987. She enjoyed gardening, baking, dancing,
sewing, and rug hooking. Shirley cherished her time at the
cottage at Linden Beach and was especially happy hosting family
celebrations there over the years.
Shirley will be sadly missed by her
husband, Gordon, Springhill; sons, Allan (Florence), Springhill, and
Cleve (Gale), New Glasgow, NS; daughter, Linda (Doug) Stockall,
Moncton, NB; seven grandchildren, Jerry (Melissa), Jason (Amanda), Tim
(Beth), Katrina, Trevor (Keri), Stuart (Katrina), and Allison
(Daniel); three great grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; sister
Ardythe (Late George) Tabor, Springhill, and many nieces and
nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased
by her sister, Margaret (Late Floyd) Smith, and brother John (Helen)
Marshall.
Arrangements have been entrusted to
A.H. Brown funeral Home, 5 McFarlane
Street, Springhill (902-597-2361) from where visiting hours will take
place 2-4 and 6-8 pm on Monday, February 1, 2016. A funeral
service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, February 2, 2016
at 2:30 pm. The Rev. Wayne McCarther officiating.
Burial will take place in the Leamington Cemetery in the
Spring.Shirley's family wish to extend a heartfelt thanks to the staff
of Gables Lodge, Amherst and High-Crest Nursing Home, for the quality
care and compassion she received during the last five
months.
Those wishing to make a donation in
Shirley's memory may do so to the Alzheimer's Society, or the charity
of one's choice.
